What is DesignerShare?

DesignerShare is a community that allows women to rent their designer clothing and accessories to one another. Our mission is to make you look and feel great every day to take on your goals, along with giving you the chance to be an entrepreneur from your own closet!

How is DesignerShare different from consignment?

We are all about renting! Instead of selling designer items one time, you get to hold onto your clothing and accessories by renting them out multiple times—they always come back to you so you can wear them again. Even better—you can earn more money by lending them over and over.

How does DesignerShare work?

The Process

When rental requests are placed, the lender must approve the request within 24 hours; a lender has the ability to reject a request if she doesn’t want her item to go out during a certain time period (she might be using it herself!). We are always available to answer any questions about the lending and rental process.

Next, schedule a pickup of the item to deliver or ship it to the renter for the predetermined amount of time. We’ll help you with UPS labels for any shipping needs.

After the rental period is finished, the item is picked up, or is scheduled for return shipment, and clothing is dry cleaned by Tide Spin/Proctor & Gamble when available. Otherwise, items are directly brought or shipped back to the lender. Tide Spin is able to turn around most clothing in two days (items are out for a total of 9 days from the lender; items can be out a difference of 3-5 days longer in our nationwide shipping program based on where they were shipped). The lender receives her payment at the end of the rental period—75 percent of the weekly price she sets, less any dry-cleaning costs. DesignerShare keeps 25 percent.

How does delivery and shipping work?
There are multiple options for delivery and shipping within the United States. If you are in the Chicagoland area, you can save money by picking up your item at our studio in Chicago. Otherwise, we offer door-to-door delivery for items within a 30-mile radius of the renter, along with nationwide shipping (typically 2-3 days) and overnight shipping. Anyone in the United States can be a renter or a lender. We’ll help you with UPS shipping labels and coordinating dry cleaning with Tide Spin/Proctor & Gamble (when available) for clothing items.

How is DesignerShare different than other rental services?

DesignerShare is a rental marketplace platform that connects users and sets up all of the logistics. Our lenders own the inventory and our dry cleaning partner handles garment care. DesignerShare provides the marketplace and facilitates shipment and delivery of the best names and styles right off the runway.

Can I visit you?

Sure! Make an appointment and come by our studio for a style consultation or just to say hi! We are located at 4611 N. Ravenswood Ave., Suite 206, Chicago, Illinois.

How to Rent

I want to rent. How do I start?

Sign up on our site for free, create a profile and search for items to rent!
All pieces on DesignerShare are originally worth $200 and up, and must be authentic and in good condition. Renters are able to search our site for week-long rental periods from one week up to four weeks. We offer pick up at our Chicago studio if you are in the Chicagoland area, along with door-to-door delivery for items within a 30-mile radius of the renter. We ship anywhere in the U.S.! You will receive your shipment in 2-3 days, with a prepaid return label included, unless you request overnight shipping. We’ll help you with return door-to-door and shipping.

What if I accidentally stain or damage an item? Is there insurance?

We place a $5 lender protection fee on each transaction on the renter. This is to cover any everyday accidents—rips, easily handled stains and anything broken that can be covered by our partners Tide Spin and ShoeDrop. If an item is truly damaged beyond repair, we will charge the renter the full retail cost of the item. DesignerShare protects lenders up to a value of $10,000.

How do I know a DesignerShare item will fit me?

In terms of sizing, renting clothes and shoes online can be tricky. It’s just like when you’re shopping online—you either know your size for a certain item type and/or designer, or you’re taking a chance! With DesignerShare, we have a 24-hour fit guarantee policy to make sure you’re looking and feeling fabulous. You have 24 hours from receiving your item to try it on—if it doesn’t fit, we offer a substitute item at the same or lesser price, or you can receive a full refund. We also offer style consultations to our users in the Chicagoland area! How do I get my items?

There are multiple ways to receive your DesignerShare rental items:

If you are in the Chicagoland area, you can arrange to pick up your item at the DesignerShare studio (4611 N. Ravenswood Ave., Suite 206, Chicago, IL) for free.

We offer door-to-door delivery for items located within a 30-mile radius of the renter—that means you could have your rental within the same day!

For items that are located more than a 30-mile radius from the renter, we offer nationwide shipping, $10 each way. a total of $20. This is completed via UPS ground shipping, typically arriving within 2-3 days.

We also offer overnight shipping nationwide for $35 one way, $10 ground shipping back, a total of $45.

How much does DesignerShare cost?

It’s always free to sign up for renters and lenders!

Renter fees: Weekly rental cost + $5 lender protection fee + half of the clothing dry cleaning costs to share responsibility. There may be a 9% tax placed on the rental cost if a user falls within Chicago city limits. If you are within a 30-mile radius of the item, door-to-door delivery is $6. If you are not within a 30-mile radius of the item, deliveries will be subject to a minimum shipping and handling charge of $20 ($10 each way) and the shipping method used will be at the discretion of DesignerShare. We will include a prepaid shipping label.

Lenders keep 75% of the rental charge, and pay for the other half of dry cleaning costs to ensure their items are in good condition for the next rental.

Can I contact the lender of an item?

You will be able to message the lender of an item if you have any questions about fit or quality, or just to let her know you love her style! We ask you keep your communications on DesignerShare’s website to protect you and the items in terms of safety, cleanliness and our procedures.

What if an item doesn't arrive the way it was portrayed?

Let’s say an item isn’t what you thought it would look like in terms of quality or cleanliness—you have 24 hours from receiving your item to exchange it for an equally priced or lesser priced item, or receive a full refund. We want you to feel comfortable and amazing with your DesignerShare piece!

Can I try on an item before renting?

Yes—but only for our Chicagoland users for now! We allow trying on items through style consultations with our stylist Catherine before placing your rental order. We will coordinate with our lender to pick up the item and set up a time with you to try it on. Book a style consultation here.

How to Lend

I want to lend my items. How do I start?

Sign up on our site for free, create a profile, and add items to your online wardrobe! (Yup, it’s that easy.) Upload photos and describe your items—we love hearing stories behind pieces. Lastly, set your weekly rental price (we suggest 10% of original retail value for most items, less for luxury labels).

You have 24 hours to accept a rental request when it comes in. Then, you will set your times for pick up and drop off with door-to-door delivery, or we will send you a UPS label to help facilitate shipping. At the end of the rental period, you will receive your commission of 75% of the weekly rental price you set less any dry-cleaning fees for clothing items. With our $5 lender protection fee set on our renters, we keep your items safeguarded and in the best condition possible.

Can I reject a rental request?

Yes! As a lender, If you decide you’d rather wear an item at the time someone would like to rent it from you, you can always reject the request. If you are heading out of town or would rather not have a piece be rented for an extended period of time, you can always click the “inactive” button next to the item on your dashboard.

Will my items be clean when they come home?

Yes—we work with Tide Spin for dry-cleaning clothing items. This way you don’t have to worry about going to a dry cleaner! They will be returned freshly cleaned. You will see a small fee taken away from your rental order to help cover dry-cleaning costs—we split these between the renter and lender to share responsibility to keep the items in good condition for each other. For future rentals, please keep your items clean and ready to go. If there are any cleanliness issues with shoes or handbags, please let us know and we’ll work with our partner ShoeDrop to clean them up for you.

How are my items transported?

They will be transported by car for door-to-door deliveries within a 30-mile radius of the rental or by UPS shipping.

Why was my item listing rejected?

This has nothing to do with style or taste! We think you’re fabulous—perhaps an item didn’t meet our original retail pricing requirement of $200 and up, or it simply isn’t an item that is in demand on DesignerShare. We also look at quality and authenticity, so we could have questions about those based on your photos. How are my items protected?

DesignerShare is here to keep your items safe and in great condition! We place a $5 lender protection fee on each transaction to cover any everyday accidents—rips, easily handled stains and anything broken that can be covered by our partners Tide Spin and ShoeDrop. If an item is truly damaged beyond repair, we will charge the renter the full retail cost of the item. DesignerShare covers lenders up to a value of $10,000.

What designers does DesignerShare accept?

Here is a list of accepted designers on DesignerShare. We are looking for contemporary and high-end designers. We want to provide you with the best names and styles right off the runway. Don’t see your designer on the list? Please reach out to Danielle Metzler at danielle@designershare.com, and we are happy to look into adding the designer for you.

I noticed a problem with my item. What happens now?

Please let us know immediately if you notice any damage with your DesignerShare item! We will ask for photos as evidence. We will work with our partners Tide Spin and ShoeDrop to make sure your items are as good as new. If an item is damaged beyond repair, we will charge the renter the original retail cost of the item—DesignerShare protects lenders up to $10,000 in damages or loss. You will be offered a replacement item or will be paid out the original retail cost of the item. Our job is to keep your items clean and safe—and to make sure we maintain a high level of trust with our lenders.

How and how much am I paid for a rental?

We pay our users through our site when your rental transaction is complete. You will be paid 75% of the weekly rental price you set, less than small dry-cleaning fees for clothing items.

Policies

Lender Protection Fee

We charge a $5 lender protection fee for each item rented.  This is to cover everyday problems—easily handled stains and other minor problems that can be fixed by our garment care and leather care partners Tide Spin and ShoeDrop. Please be mindful that this does not mean a renter can be careless with the piece. Renters are responsible for all damage, up to and including the full retail cost of the item if lost, damaged or destroyed.  DesignerShare protects the Lender only (and NOT THE RENTER) against loss and damage to their wardrobe items, up to a fair market value limit of $10,000, unless otherwise agreed upon in writing. Refunds and Exchanges

If an item does not fit or does not arrive in the condition you expected it to, we have a 24-hour fit guarantee and exchange or refund program. If you contact DesignerShare within 24 hours of receiving your item, we can offer you an exchange of the item for a substitute of equal or lesser value, or a full refund.

Late Fees

If you do not schedule a delivery pick up or ship your item promptly on the day your rental period ends, we will charge a $50/day late fee. This is to ensure the lender gets her item back quickly and in great condition, and to allow the next DesignerShare rental of the item to occur on time!
