What is DesignerShare?

DesignerShare is the first truly peer-to-peer marketplace for women to rent their designer clothing and accessories.

How does DesignerShare work?

Interested in Lending?

Sign up on our site for free, create a profile, and add items to your online wardrobe! (Yup, it’s that easy.) Only Chicagoland users can list their items for now, but everyone can rent. Upload photos, describe the sizing and any additional details of your items. Lastly, set your weekly rental price (we suggest 10% of original retail value). We will contact you directly if you have an item that is being shipped in our nationwide shipping program to determine the best days and times for you to pick up to fit the rental schedule!

Interested in Renting?

Sign up on our site for free, create a profile and search for items to borrow!
All pieces on DesignerShare are worth $200 and up, and must be in good condition. Renters are able to search our site for week-long rental periods from one week up to five weeks. We now ship anywhere in the continental U.S.! You will receive your shipment in 2-3 days, with a prepaid return label included. Deliveries outside of the Chicagoland area will be subject to a minimum shipping and handling charge of $19.95 and the shipping method used will be at the discretion of DesignerShare.

The Process

  1. When rental requests are placed, the lender must approve the request within 24 hours before the renter’s payment is accepted; a lender has the ability to reject a request if she doesn’t want her item to go out during a certain time period (she might be using it herself!). We are always available to answer any questions about the lending and rental process.
  2. We schedule a pickup of the item with the lender to deliver or ship it to the renter for the predetermined amount of time. We will work with lenders to facilitate nationwide rental and shipping.
  3. Wear and enjoy! Remember to tag us on Instagram (@designershare), Facebook and Twitter (@designershare_).
  4. After the rental period is finished, we pick up the item, or have it scheduled for return shipment, and clothing, dry cleaned by Tide Spin. Otherwise, we bring it directly back to the lender. Tide Spin is able to turn around most clothing in two days (items are out for a total of 9 days from the lender in Chicagoland; items can be out a difference of 3-5 days longer in our nationwide shipping program based on where they were shipped). The lender receives her payment at the end of the rental period—75 percent of the weekly price she sets, less any dry-cleaning costs. DesignerShare keeps 25 percent.

How does delivery and shipping work?

If you are in a 35-mile radius of Chicago, we offer free door-to-door delivery for a limited time! Otherwise, we now offer shipping to the continental U.S (excludes Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and other U.S territories); only Chicagoland users can list their items for rent, but those outside of the area can rent items to be shipped to them.

If you are looking to rent an item outside of the Chicago area you will go through the typical rental process, but you’ll receive a message to input your shipping zip code. DesignerShare will contact you directly to finish the shipping process. If you are a lender with an item that wishes to be shipped, you will be contacted by DesignerShare to coordinate the pick up and drop off times for us to ship your item.

Great news! We’ve started our nationwide pilot shipping program!

If you are looking to rent an item outside of the Chicago area you will go through the typical rental process, but you’ll receive a message to input your shipping zip code and phone number. DesignerShare will contact you directly within 12 hours by phone to finish the shipping process, including your address, best delivery times and payment information. If you are a lender with an item to be shipped, DesignerShare will contact you to coordinate the pick up and drop off times.

Is there insurance?

We place a $5 lender protection fee on each transaction on the renter. This is to cover any everyday accidents—rips, easily handled stains and anything broken that can be covered by our partners Tide Spin and ShoeDrop. If an item is truly damaged beyond repair, we will charge the renter the full retail cost of the item. DesignerShare self-insures up to a value of $10,000.

How much does DesignerShare cost?

It’s always free to sign up for Renters and Lenders!

Renter fees: Weekly rental cost + $5 lender protection fee + half of the clothing dry cleaning costs to share responsibility. There may be a 9% tax placed on the rental cost if a user falls within Chicago city limits. If you are outside of the Chicagoland area, deliveries will be subject to a minimum shipping and handling charge of $19.95 and the shipping method used will be at the discretion of DesignerShare. We will include a prepaid shipping label.

Lenders keep 75% of the rental charge, and pay for the other half of dry cleaning costs to ensure their items are in good condition for the next rental.

What if the item I rented doesn’t fit?

We refund the renter and offer a free rental for another item of the same rental cost if she reports an item not fitting within 24 hours of delivery.

What if I have questions for the lender?

As we continue to build our site, we strive to provide you with profiles to get to know other users, direct message for any questions you might have or if you just want to network further! In the meantime, please contact Community Manager Danielle Metzler, at danielle@designershare.com.

What designers does DesignerShare accept?

Here is a list of accepted designers on DesignerShare. We are looking for contemporary and high-end designers. We want to provide you with the best names and styles right off the runway. Don’t see your designer on the list? Please reach out to Danielle Metzler at danielle@designershare.com, and we are happy to look into adding the designer for you.

Can I reject a rental request?

Yes! If you decide you’d rather wear an item at the time someone would like to rent it from you, you can always reject the request. If you are heading out of town or would rather not have a piece be rented for an extended period of time, you can always click the “inactive” button next to the item on your dashboard (this looks like a pause symbol).

How is DesignerShare different from consignment?

Instead of selling designer items one time, you get to hold onto your clothing and accessories by renting them out multiple times—they always come back to you. Even better—you can earn more money by lending them over and over.

How is DesignerShare different than Rent The Runway?

DesignerShare is a marketplace platform that connects users and sets up all of the logistics. Our lenders own the inventory and our dry cleaning partner handles garment care. DesignerShare provides the marketplace and facilitates shipment and delivery of the best names and styles right off the runway.
